Home Vintage Asylum

Classic gear from yesteryear; vintage audio standing the test of time.

RE: Ive kinda already taken the next step :-)

I know a lot of people like the Phase Linear, but you need very good transistor to hang with good tube gear. I have my doubts about the Phase Linear being able to best you tube gear (YMMV!). I would rebuild. The amp has a reputation for failing in a spectacular manner (hence the name Flame Linear). However, it is my understanding that when properly rebuilt, they are reliable. And it will sound good, just not as good as what you have.

You preamp does look like a very solid design. I liked the tone controls on the SP-9. To bad it doesn't have a mono switch, but I'll bet they could add one if you asked.

That Sansui AU-9500 does look good! (See link!)
