I agree with everything you say, but what can you do? Trying to run a 50 year old piece of tube gear with original electrolytic and selenium rectifiers is dangerous. I have heard of some Japanese vintage guys who track down working vintage parts, but for most of us, this in not possible. Our only practical choice at this point is restored or shelf-decoration. We may be able to get back to the original sound, but if it sounds good, I won't loose too much sleep!
