Wood filler will of course fill the hole but obviously you'll never match the grain of the veneer. It will always look like a patch job. If the cabinet veneer is walnut or mahogany, re-veneering them should be pretty straight forward. Both species of wood are available in adhesive-backed sheets if you don't want to mess with glue and paper-backed veneer. You might want to remove the veneer from the bottom to use for color matching the new veneer with the original. I've found a heat gun, a hair dryer, or steam iron will soften the original glue. The veneer should then peel off in one piece.
