It's easier to cut the fabric, then reattach with new staples and hide it all under the wood top piece. But fabric may then be 'baggy'.
I'm not suggesting he shouldn't buy them. Yes, the stands are worth over $100 new, but they're pretty worthless w/o working speakers. That's the reasoning tht gets your basement full of half-used stereo gear. Ask me how I know! =8^D
Me - a year ago:
"Hey, these HPM-100s are only $20 and they only need new midranges. (Back hurting from carrying them into the house), "Oh, and one L-pad is melted and one speaker terminal is broken off...(etc.)" - Another pair for the junk pile.
I'll bet others can relate. I am cured of the desire to "rescue" every piece I see up for sale cheap. I still buy - but I hold out for good stuff.
