Thinking the same thing about the crossover. The woofer is better looking thn some others I've seen pulled from elcheapo speakers. Possibly your buddy could try a project of bracing and deadening the cabinets and maybe chnging the wiring and even upgrading the cap. Low cost, low risk project.
