Hello people!!
I have an old pair of early 70's ROR studio monitors.
Very small (11" x 6" x 4 1/2") with a 1" textile dome tweeter, 4" fabric surround woofer, and 4" fabric surround passive radiator.
These are finished in a nice Walnut veneer on all 4 sides. and even under the foam grill!
ROR was in production from 1972-1987 in Flushing, N.Y.
Many ended up in recording studios (Bearsville Studios, Eddie Van Halen, David Gilmore)....while others were sold out of Crazy Eddie's in NYC for big $$$.
I removed the 4" drivers and resealed the fabric surround with a very thin coat of Aileens Fabric Fusion (a very flexible fabric adhesive).
Replaced the 2.2uf metal can caps with 2.2uf Bennic Poly caps from Madisound.
Also replaced the tiny screw terminals with 5-way binding posts.
These speakers always had great imaging....but now....damm near holographic!
Considering their size, you wouldn't expect much of a bottom end....so I wasn't surprised not to have one.
But with the woofer surrounds resealed....hey....I've got bass!!
VMPS and M&K they ain't....but pretty usable bass, probably down to 75-80hz.
They never will be head-banging heavy-metal speakers or full orchestra classical .
They do a pretty good job on electric rock, country and jazz.
Where they REALLY SHINE is vocals (especially female), piano, and acoustic music.
Eva Cassidy, Wailin Jennys, Emmylou Harris, Seldom Scene............
Closest thing to being in a small club, minus the cover charge.
Have fun!!
Steve
