I AGREE with the thinking that the wimpy 'X7 should not be used to drive triodes.
The 'U7 section in the 12DW7 should be acceptable as a "concertina" phase splitter, but I dislike that triode, when voltage gain is an object.
Scott/Dyna style circuitry using pentode voltage gain DC coupled to a Cathodyne phase splitter, from a single "bottle" (7199, 6U8, etc.), seems like the best choice. So, I suggest a Scott LK72 as the basis for this project.
