It required changes at the tube socket. I think a 7-pin to 9-pin socket change was required. I did this about 25 years ago, not much memory of the circuit details after so many years. This mod should be on-line. Look in the QST magazine files around the 1960s or early 1970s.
You see, that 6ES8 can take over a volt input without overload and still produce little IMD products. Nothing I am aware of will take that input voltage when set up for an input in the microvolt range. Not even a Ga-Fet SS device.
