I owned both Collins R-390 & R390A. I like the R-390 with the five 6BJ6 I.F. stages best due to smooth audio on AM/SSB vs mechanical filter R-390A. Also, the R390 had voltage regulated B+ vs non-regulated B+ in the R-390A. Naturally, both receivers were upgraded to DIY PP 6AQ5s. I modified the audio module without any outboard items so it looked stock. How about that silky smooth SE 6K6GT audio amp in a Hallicrafters SX-99 (if the memory serves me right on correct model- owned so many). That is another early receiver in my life. No wonder I like audio today!
So, after performing modifications & repairs since the age of 12, I got most of it figured out many years later. My first receiver was a BC-348 when I was 11. I built a 5Y3 PS to replace that dynamotor PS back then. If you can find the 12 volt version called a RCA BC-224 (?), the tuning capacitor has zero temperature drift design made of exotic metals. Figure that in 1940.
At the age of 8, I got my hands on an ARRL Handbook and read it cover to cover about 10 times until I understood most of the math & theory. It took about 2 years of self study. At the age of 10 on my bedroom looked like a science lab. Funny how I had a 'why can't I get it' attitude that young. I only gotten much worst over the years, but I got one hell of a job over it today.
