I'd be taking a look at how the tonearm sets down onto the LP. How the cantilever reacts when this happens tells a lot about the amount of force being placed on the stylus in the groove. Your problem is somewhere in there such as the cuing arm not going all the way down or the counterweight not being set properly, or the headshell not allowing the stylus to enter the groove from being turned sideways.
