Well, the Dual 701 came back from Art's TV today, and they fixed the speed problem perfectly - at least for now, and at least as far as I can tell. Given the problems I've had with this thing, their repair could blow up tomorrow. However, I do have a 90 day warranty.
However, nice as that is, now the turntable won't track at all. I've carefully and repeatedly tried to set it up per the owner's manual, but nothing works. The stylus mostly just skates right across the record toward the center, no matter what.
Which makes no sense. Before the speed went blooey, it tracked perfectly. And I changed nothing that had to do with tracking. Maybe the drive-in repair guy did something, I dunno, though.
It wouldn't track when I originally got it, until I replaced the stylus with a new Shibata for the AT15S cart. I discovered today that the 701 offers anti-skate adjustments for both conical and elliptical styli, and the Shibata is neither. Still, it was working fine before.
I have no idea where to go next. Art's was very meticulous about getting me to note and sign a disclaimer about anything already wrong with the machine, and I didn't list skating problems. I expect they will fight me over trying to make this fit under their 90 day warranty.
I'm pretty close to deciding the 701 isn't worth the bother. I've never had it running decently for more than 48 hours, and to bring it home from the shop and have something that was working no longer be working bums me right out.
It might be the greatest turntable in the world, but if I can't get it to work, for me it's a piece of crapola.
