Hi Brian,

I don't have any experience with VanAlstine's solid state products either, but I did find that he wrote an article on improving the PAT-4 in his Audio Basics newsletter. It is on page 29 of the 1986 issues, which are on his website. Not surprisingly, it includes some of the things you have mentioned; tone control defeat, streamlining the signal path, and upgrading the power supply.

If I had a PAT-4, I would be tempted to gut it and install the tube phono and linestage board offered by VTA: http://www.tubes4hifi.com/pre3.htm
