I've placed the capacitor across the switch itself or placed the cap across the power transformers's primary winding. The former suppreses the arc & the later shunts the arc spike away from transformer. I suggest use whichever is most convenient to access, either method is effective. If you use readily available 400v DC-rated caps instead of AC-rated parts for such duty, eventual failure is likely to occur. Replacing the switch itself is also advised as electrical arc pitting of the contacts after all these years is what is now causing the loud pop; new contacts will arc less at make or break. Placing a cap on the old switch is just affixing a band-aid. OR, instruct the new owner to simply turn the Volume control all the way DOWN when powering On or Off & then there is no loud pop heard thru speakers.
