I had a pair of older JBL mids reconed last year. I also have a pair that I bought in 2001 that had been on the shelf for years and years. How old were they? The adhesive on the tape holding the box closed had dried and turned to powder. They took weeks to break in. In an A-B comparison, the reconed mids sounded exactly like the older pair.
I'd have to conclude that if the speakers have been played regularly, the suspension will stay loosened up, and the cone age does not seem to be a problem.
As to woofers where the bass resonance frequency is an issue, a friend of mine measured a large number of Bozak woofers, and found the bass resonance more or less to specification (40 Hz). Since some of these went back to the mid 60's, cone age and even suspension age doesn't seem to be a big issue.
Both the JBL's and the Bozaks use a corrugated spider and surround.
