stupid question on speaker ohms

I realize that this is probably a stupid question, but here goes. I am currently running a SE el84 Magnavox rebuild into some 8 ohm full range speakers. I am thinking of building some zigmahornets using a 4 ohm speaker. What does the ohms have to do with the volume of sound produced ? Does it hurt the amp to hook up 4 ohm speakers to it ?
