I realize this sort of remote diagnosis is haphazard at best, but I thought it couldn't hurt to ask. I bought a Dual 701 from a guy who said the low price ($100) was because there was an intermittent buzzing sound - rare, but it happened. And he delivered the tt to me at a shopping mall - no way to check it out. (I know, I know - warning flags all over the place, and stupid me...)I got it home. It looked very clean. I plugged it in, watched the platter spin up, put on an album, and it sounded fine - then I heard the buzzing - more like the sort of hum you get when something is shorting out. Then I smelled something burning-melting. And the platter stopped spinning. I yanked the plug.
I opened it up, and tracked the burning smell - it was quite obvious - to the transformer module. The fuse in the module, however, was unpopped.
I saw no other evidence of heat, crackle, smoke, or burns. The insides looked quite clean. What do you think? Have I fried this thing beyond hope, or might it be worth taking it into a repair shop? And if you live in the SF Bay area, do you have any people/shops/whatever you might recommend for this sort of repair work?
Thanks for anything.
