I'd encourage you to try and find a setup that gets the speakers urther apart and further from you. Advents have widely spaced mounting for the woofer and tweeter, and it takes some distance between you and the speaker for the two to sound seamlessly as a single source. Some of the moving around of instruments may be due to hearing the woofer and tweeter as separate sources.
Getting the two cabinets further apart will affect the amount of chestiness in male voices. I won't go into the technical details (it's called "mutual coupling") but the distance between the speakers is a way of fine tuning the midbass. If you can't find a suitable location for the speakers, I'd recommend trying stacking them, top to top and see if you can find a location for the stack that's 6-8' away from you. It will be a monaural source, pretty much, but will also take the best advantage of the Advent properties. The stack should sit on the floor with no more than a couple of inches under the bottom one. You'll also want to put something between the speakers to keep the top one from sliding off. I used 1" squares of drawer liner (rubbery covered open weave stuff). Wire each speaker to its own channel and try the amp set to mono and stereo to see which you like best.
How small is your room? My room is 12' x 15' with a 30" deep and 5' wide alcove at the entry which has 48" wide double doors. The doors stay open and I normally sit in front of the opening and off to the left side. On the other side of the doors is a hallway, so the alcove depth and hallway width are added to the room length and I end up sitting about 1/3 of the way between the speakers and the wall of the hallway. It's the best use I can make of the room and it does work pretty well. Took me a long time to figure it out, though.
