by about 6 feet or more & hear how stereo can create a sense of depth or a soundstage wherein instruments/mucisians are in your room & at different distances from you, as at a live performance. When placed next to each other as in your pic(ture), the sound you hear is simply Monophonic in origin (even if a stereo source is played, because there is no separation Left-to-Right of the reproduced signal). And by not placing the amplifier & source directly on top of speakers, the sound heard will be even more detailed because mechanical-audible feedback from speakers to amplifier & source is presently bluring such detail.
