I have used both BIN and reserve with a lower openning bid. These didn't seem to me to offer any advantages over your method. You only scare away the low-ballers with reasonable openning bid: who cares about them?

It seems to me that more people today hold off bidding until late in the auction, and a great many now use bid sniping services -- I do.
