The XP55B was designed by Terry Apperly. He was brought in from England by Emerson after they bought Fisher. The designs were more modern and more accurate than the older Fisher designs and were optimized for use with SS receivers. I have talked to Terry (it was decades ago) about those and the XP-44's. They were designed for a low price point, so are not the best he could do, but he was still fairly pleased with the outcome.

I'd suggest recapping with similar type caps and see how they sound before you try changing tweeters. Back in the late 70's, a good friend had a pair, and I thought they sounded pretty good. Set them up at ear level and try a little toe in.
