I have a pair of Fisher XP 55 B's that I've posted about several years ago! I had stated back then that they sounded good to my ears using my MARANTZ SR 225 receiver!Everything sounded smooth and well balanced at that time and for the most part still do,but only when I use the MARANTZ SR 225 receiver! With my Superscope A 235 amp or using my MARANTZ 2250B
or for that matter my JVC RX 307 receiver the sound is just not as good no matter where I put the tone controls!I leave the tone controls on the
MARANTZ SR 225 receiver at the flat position(12:00)!My Superscope A 235 amp sounds 2nd best but still not as good as the MARANTZ SR 225 receiver!
Being as they are considered old speakers by now would new caps in the crossover network be a wise thing to do or is it what we always talk about here matching the speakers with the right equipment?I have posted a link to an Ebay auction where the seller claims the tweeters were the weak link in these speakers and he states the following"For auction is a pair of vintage Fisher XP-55B free-piston 2-way acoustic suspension loudspeakers. The speakers have been restored and look like new:
-The original vinyl veneer has been replaced, mitered and wrapped to look like the original
-The screw-type terminals have been replaced with recessed spring-loaded terminals
-The crossover caps have been replaced
-The paper cone tweeter has been replaced with a textile dome tweeter

The grills are in excellent condition and the re-vinyled (in keeping with the original XP-55B style) cabinets look like new. The classic, warm sound of the Fishers have been enhanced by the natural and clear sound of the textile dome tweeters, addressing one of the XP-55B model's biggest criticisms. The reverse-roll doped surrounds will not deteriorate like foam. The speakers produce tight, useful bass into the 30Hz-range and can handle a decent amount of power - 35-50W. Dimensions are 10" wide x 20" tall x 7.5" deep.
Sounds to me like he altered the over all sound, which he claims is better then the original sound!Has anyone ever upgraded these speakers before?Should I leave well enough alone?I never had them apart to check out the drivers or wiring in these! If I did anything I would like to keep the sound as close to the way Fisher intended to have them sound because that is why I still use them on a daily basis due to the nice smooth well
balanced sound they have! What I mean by smooth well balanced sound is that the highs or mids or for that matter the low bass notes due not seem to over ride one another they just seemed to be all equally balanced if that makes any sense, for hours of non fatiguing listen!I mostly listen to Instrumentals by Lawrence Welk or James Last, etc. whether on Vinyl,8 track, cassette tape,cd,etc all sound good to my ears!More Modern sounding music, like top 40 rock or modern country do not sound as good, not really bad mind you just not as good! These speakers seem best with classical music or the others I've mentioned and may have even been voiced for that style of music? What are your thoughts? Please give me some advice I can use
to decide if I should leave well enough alone or do a mod like simular to what this seller did?I would hate to ruin the smooth well balanced sound they seem to have now for slightly better sound!Brian
