My real job involves circuitry with unpackaged dice. I have been working with them for 30 years. I agree that some semi's are light sensitive, but to be honest, most that we use are not affected. The most common exceptions are voltage reference dice.
That said, we still block light when running acceptance test. Better to err on the side of safety.
I must also add that I have never seen visible light emitted from any semi other than an LED (unless severely overloaded).
