John,

It's obvious you are quite familiar with the piece. How stout is the power trafo? My guess is that Sony used a 6CA4/EZ81 rectifier. That type can be used up to a 150 mA. draw. If the power trafo is stout enough to provide 150 mA. of B+, it could be used in an "El Cheapo" PP stereoblock.
