I don't know that they all emit light, but they are also light sensitive. You don't really want ambient lighting modulating your signals, do you? This was/is a problem with very low level circuitry, where diodes have to be painted black or otherwise shielded from light. BTW, did you know that you can wire up a transistor such that applying a positive voltage generates a small negative voltage? It's an LED-detector situation, written up by Bob Pease.
