Thx, Charles, for you input - it turns out that dried out lytics were at fault - jeez, that's surprizing!

There are two 180uF lytics there, on the amp stage (white mallory's), tip I gotta thank Terry DeWick for. While at it, I replaced all lytics that were in sight.

I got the amp stages working this way, and now I need to get the preamp back to spec. One preamp channel is very low in volume, and I take the signal path tantalums (YUCK) at preamp out to be prime suspects.

At this point, after thorough cleaning, the MA5100 looks great and sounds decent. After some care for the preamp side it will sound great, I betcha.
