You may just be experiencing the sound of a Grado - they all tend to sound this way somewhat. It'll get a little better with break-in, about 10-20 hours.

They also are not the best trackers. Try adding appx. 2-3 grams of weight to the headshell and rebalance. Make sure the table is level and double check your setup. Best tracking will be 1.7-1.8 grams. I usually set the damping at 1/4 of the tracking #.
