I'm not very knowledgeable so take my advice for what it's worth. The first thing I would do is get some Caig's De-Oxit and carefully clean the connections and wires on the tonearm and the RCA's on the TT. If that didn't help then I'd redo the whole cartridge setup to make sure it's correct.

If it's still sounding poor then I'd think about looking into the tracking force mechanism. It may be the problem anyway but I'd check the obvious things first.
