Denon DP 45f TT - sound problem

I started using my old Denon DP 45F that had been in storage for about 5 years. I bought a new cart (grado blue), installed and aligned it. I was expecting great sound, but the highs seemed to be missing - no crispness to the sound. I was playing it thru a vintage Yamaha recv'r CR-440. I also tried a NAD recv'r with the same flat sound.

Any suggestions on what to try next? Could something in the wiring be bad? I set the tracking force to 1.5g, It skipped a lot, so I upped it to 2 g. On this TT the tracking force is not a spring/weight arrangement near the arm pivot, it is a dial on the deck of the player (so maybe it has some kind of electronic tracing force system that has gone awry?.

Thanks for any ideas.

Mitch
