The cast frames speak to quality, the Alnico magnets just date them to the 60's.
I suspect, the lower damping factor in the reason the older gear (is it solid state?) sounds better with those speakers. They were probably designed for either tube amps, or early capacitively coupled SS amps. A late model amp with a high DF will sound different.
If you're using SS amps, try putting a 0.5 to 1 ohm resistor in series and see how that sounds. That will simulate the source impedance of a tube amp.
