My son wanted to pick up an old PC to tear apart so I took him down to one of the local thrifts. While he was poking around I wandered over to the electronics section, even though I had sworn it off lately. There were a whole bunch of speakers stacked around. One big box caught my eye. When I pulled off the grill I couldn't believe it. It was a JBL L100. Cabinet was in good shape and all the drivers looked fine, even the tweeter foam was intact. There was some mildew but cabinets were solid. Found its partner (no grill) and the price tag said $16 for the pair. Lying on the floor next to it was a Hitachi SR-804 receiver, which I never heard of before. Said it had a "Class G" amp. Few nicks and dings, but all the lights lit up and the meters were working. All were kind of musty and mildewy, but I figured for $25 bucks for the lot what the heck. Luckily the wife was away when I got home.
Hooked them up and they sounded great. The little Hitachi has some serious amp, it was driving the JBLs loud, no sweat. Hooked up the L100s to a couple of other 80 watt receivers I have and they sounded just as good.
From all the posts here it looks like I stumbled on a good deal. Which is encouraging since I had all but given up on finding decent vintage gear for cheap. So keep the faith all, there are still deals to be had.
