However, I think there is a thread of truth in what he says. Music is joy and for some a depature from the mundane. There is some music that has struck me so emotionally deeply that I have been brought to tears. Eric Clapton's "Tears from Heaven" (Is that the right title) tribute to his late son puts a lump in my throat every time. And there are others that cover the entire emotional spectrum from despair to joy.
Ecstacy? That means something very specific for me and is related to ones relationship with a higher power. I'll leave the ecstacy debate to the religious philosophers.
As I have matured the pleasure I receive from music has evolved. As a teen loud and nasty hit the pleasure button. Today I enjoy a wider and, I hope, more intricate variety of music. Black Sabbath just doesn't get it for me today. Find them hard to listen to. Although the lyrics in some ways may still be relevant, the music for me is not. Crosby, Stills and Nash for me very relevant today, maybe even more so, and musically relevant.
Now does it take 10 grand to get to music that touches the heart, soul, mind....?? I don't think so. Have less than a grand into my system. Sure it has its limitations but at times it raises the hair on my neck with the right piece of music. I listened to live acoustic this past weekend. Had a great time. One guitar, two singers fed through a smallish board through a couple of peavey monitors. $10 on cheese and sausage and a couple glasses of wine (ok a few glasses of wine) and it was pleasure for all.
If you allow it, whether $10,000 or $1000, the music will take you there.

HB
