Not only didn't manufacturers use a split secondary, but during most of post World War II it was rare to find American made table radios that actually used a power transformer. They elected to use series connected heaters and hot chassis, wrapping the whole assembly in plastic for what passed as 'safety'.
Honestly, the only table radio I saw which could be converted to 230VAC was a RCA. If you saw it you would realise that it was a telefunken/blaupunkt standard model with the RCA logo imposed on it.
