A voltage doubler or full-wave bridge is usually preferred for a high-powered amplifier, since it can be smaller than one with a full-wave center-tap for the same output. The replacement was probably undersized if it was no larger than the original.

I don't know the DC voltage, but the HV winding would be around 160V at 1.8A. Twice the voltage, half the current for full-wave bridge. The schematic is in Sams #905-Servicer (not a complete folder, so it WON'T have transformer specs, may not have voltages)

What are the maximum dimensions? One of the Antek toroids might fit, or a transformer from an old PA amp or the like...
