Renegade HD 880s?

I have got a chance to buy a pair of pristine Marantz HD 880s. Here's what bothers me. Owner says he fried 4 amps for being underpowered in the 70s. Can this be true? I thought an underpowered amp merely sounds "soft"? I was going to take my pet Super T amp Improved up to his house this Sat. to audition them but do I risk this or my Marantz 4300 which is presently broken but will be repaired? Please advise. Thanks.
