In the Bill Thomas rebuild article, he points out that a lot of FM-3 hum problems may be caused by the grounding of the RCA outputs (grounded to chassis vs running a ground to a point on one of the pcb's to eliminate a ground loop..something like that) - check the linked article for more; it looked like something that was easy to fix
