Hi, Travis:

You should examine some of those annual equipment directories published by Audio and High Fidelity magazines in the past.

They show relative figures for SENSITIVITY and SELECTIVITY and good quieting. You will undoubtedly find that reception in stereo at such distances may not exactly pan out for you, due to many issues. Switching to MONO will provide a more listenable signal in favor of less overall noise

I think that you would want to find a tuner which would provide you good sensitivity with adequate quieting, essentially.

You should be able to determine which of these figures are ideally suited, from reading product reviews for the pricier units on the market over the years, or even these days. I think that some of the best solid-state tuners may offer improved performance for your needs, but you never know. One tuner which would be great sounding but not that sensitive, is the Yamaha CT-7000. Sometimes, a tuner can sound great when in a strong local signal area but at the same time, be ill-suited for "dx" opeation.

High Sensitivity will help you pull in the distant stations with your multi-element antenna w/rotator and high selectivity will help you avoid pulling in near frequencies or those which are close enough to otherwise cause interference or block a distant signal. Aiming your antenna broadside to the offending signal may boost reception capabilities in favor of the one you want to target, which directivity is all about. Also, think in terms of considering stacked antennas (identical ones) for greater gain.

You can do the research on this subject all you want on the web.

Happy Listening!
