I tore into one of mine because it wasn't working. Two major problems found: 1. The NE2 lamp was weak and didn't fire off reliably. 2. The leads on the CdS cells were pulled loose internally and made intermittent contact with the cell electrodes. I suspect the latter was caused by how the assy was potted into the can. Too, these are pretty cheap CdS cells...I would have expected Marantz of the time to use the hermetically sealed type.

Although I was able to find suitable cells at RS, I would think a better solution to the 10B optocoupler issue would be a non-opto circuit using an IC type analog switch.
