Been there, done that.

The classic red herring, though, especially in RF, is at the connectors (interfaces). ANYTHING you put in the line increases SWR and decreases signal. Even a female/female coax coupler contributes at least 1 dB of insertion loss. The act of breaking and making connections may have had considerable impact on the net attenuation of the coax transmission cabling.
