That sounds quite reasonable, since with protruding handles, there would always be the liklihood of damage in transit if the carton were dropped.

The standard packing carton with inserts for the regular Model 10-B was impressive enough! I still have two of those stored away.

BTW, I once ran into an oddball collector who owned five sealed cartons containing 10-Bs. He acquired them at cost at the time when the Marantz Company came under the ownership of SuperScope, Inc.

He treated them like the proverbial "holy grail of audio" and that was around 1978!
