I built a pair of Fostex as you described and wow is all I can say. They're worth 10 times the cost of building them. Amazing sound. Since the Japanese audiophiles have such tight spaces in general, they have some amazing designs for nearfield listening. Google fostex and you'll see some cool ideas.
