Ok, you answered your question. The new tube has much higher gain than the used and tired tube, thus rejection of the other FM station very close in frequency becomes an issue. Resolution is a directional antenna if the unwanted FM station is not in the same direction. Or, possibly much less of a high gain interior type antenna if the unwanted station is weak and the FM station of choice is strong.
