Ok getting ready to take the plunge for my recently moded Sansui TU-717 (thanks Ken @ Stereo Surgeons! What a great job!!!!).
Will be putting an APS-9 in the attic of a ranch house (I know, I know....) and considering a run of about 50ft of Belden 7731A to the basement where the tuner/system resides. Here are my questions:
1) If I'm using an F-connector and the 75 ohm tuner input, I need a balun for the APS right? Anything else I should know? Are these pretty generic?
2) I'm thinking RG-11 - is the Belden 7731A the best? Others? I know it's hard to work with - what kind of radius can you make with it? Is it so stiff I'll have to put a rock on the tuner to keep it from being pulled off the shelf? Any problems running this under carpet (trying not to take the basement ceiling out since my guess is this stuff doesn't "fish").
3) What's everyone's favorite anntena rotator? Is there something with infared or similar that'll work from the basement to the attic so I don't have to run separate wires to the antenna rotator motor? Distance can't be more than 25 feet since it's a ranch.
4) Any particular things I need to deal with in positioning the antenna in the attic? Not many options for orientation but should just be able to do a 360 degrees given APS turning radius. There's no metal roof it's wood.
5) Any guess as to gain loss with attic placement versus the roof? Most of my stations are within 50 miles and not trying to do any Dxing.
6) Who actually installs antennas these days as everyone has cable?
Thanks for your advice Barry
