I don't know why you want AM, but each to his own.

I think shielded anything is not what you want. The optimum antenna for AM is several miles of wire due to AM's wavelength (1 MHz is about .186 mile wavelength, or about 1000 ft. So I would start by attached an unshielded wire to the existing antenna of whatever length you can tolerate and see if, by routing it around different paths you can achieve good reception. Even if it doesn't work, it's cheap and easy.
