Without knowing any better, I bought a Sangean HD tuner and received it last night. My immediate reaction was, "wow, this really [stinks] . . . " Using the Info button on the tuner, I saw that my favorite Jazz 88.3 from Newark, NJ was broadcasting with an HD-2 channel in MP1. Question: When used for audio, is MP1 even worse than MP3?
I'd never heard of MP1, but from what I've been able to gather (since last night), it's an early compression algorithm that was meant for video. It that never went very far because the video quality was so bad and is basically a dinosaur. WNYC 93.9 was broadcasting in MP3 and I couldn't decide which was worse -- but do you have any insight on MP1 versus MP3?
btw, to my ears, I prefer the sound I get using a Tivoli radio as a (mono) tuner in my kitchen stereo. (The kitchen system consists of a Sophia Electric EL-34 integrated amp, JM Lab ceiling speakers, and Kimber 4TC speaker wire through the walls. The other source is a long Kimber Hero running from a Tape Out in the main system.) The Sangean will go back to Crutchfield -- and this morning I bought a Kenwood L07T on Audiogon.
