After a little work, the HDT-1X can deliver surprising sonics. It reminds of a 29.00 CD player. This is a positive comment.
With the data compression, it will never match the original. But does sound real good.
I have both HD and a Wifi radio. The HD is much better sounding than the wifi. One local station listened to streams at 135 - 120kbps. It is not even close to the sound from HD. Some locals also stream as low as 20kbps. Sounds like elevator quality.
The compression techniques have to be the reason. Real and MPEG at 135 K do not sound as good as HD at 48K.
If wifi is the future, I hope they find a way to improve the quality. HD has it now.
Also, I have talked to B.Beezley several times over the last couple years about tuners. He is a no tweak, no nonsense, by the numbers guy. He feels the sound quality available from HD is way better than analog. This comes from the testing he did on the HDT-1 and HDT-1X.
