At least I think that's right. ;-)!

Most were designed to cope with both a horisontal polarity and a vertical pol. component in the received signal, as caused by bounces off hills, tower-blocks and etc- which made them less prone to MPath from single pol. transmissions.

OTOH many stations now add 'a bit' of OOP to 'help' car radios on the S/N ratio front. Often called mixed / slant 45degree pol'n.
