It's "Hybrid Digital" not "High Definition" after all.
Read Brian Beezley's review if no one else. Stereophile did one this month as have other mags. It's not the tuners, like the Sangean, that are at fault; rather it's the engineering at the stations.
They do compress, they don't necessarily use the same format/compression on HD as on analog, and they may not even pay much attention yet to how the compress this stuff! It's not a very clean or pretty or consistent picture.
Nobody is seriously agreeing that the FM is "near CD quality" except the hype masters at Ibiquity. They are saying that AM is massively improved (does anyone listen to AM anymore for other than sports?), but FM is iffy.
I'm not speaking from direct experience here. I've been interested and researching it, but it doesn't appear to live up to the promises made... YMMV
