If you have a lot of stations around you in different directions, you could build a J-pole style antenna that could mount on the roof - there are a lot of plans out there for ones for the 144MHz amateur radio band, you can scale up the plans for the 3 meter broadcast band.

If you're trying to get distant stations in one direction, a RatShack or Channel Master yagi beam on a rotator would work better than a vertical.
