I, too, have an FM-1000, without the drop-in crystal oscillator. It had passed through the hands of the Fisher Doctor before I purchased it. My tech had to undo all of his misguided mods to "modernize" the sound, all of which seemed aimed at eliminating any bass and accentuating the treble. The crystal module was supposed to lock in one particular frequency so that it could be monitored constantly.
They can be wonderful tuners and which give McIntosh's best (the MR67, which I have, and the 71) a real run for the money. Remarkably, the Japanese-made meters on mine work flawlessly - even the notorious Audio Level one. I replaced the ragtag assortment of tubes, except for the two 6CW4 nuvistors, with Fisher-branded tubes. It sounds great. And looks really neat.
