Fisher FM-1000 Crystal Oscillator

I have noticed that some of the Fisher FM-1000 tuners have what is called a crystal oscillator (at least that is what I think it is called) mounted on the rear of the chassis and others do not. Please tell me what this is for and the significance of it.
